How To Manage A Remote Team

Today, working remotely or simply working from home has turned into something more than a trend. In the days of the pandemic, it has become a necessary step for the vast majority of businesses around the globe. As a result, thousands of team leaders and managers have suddenly found themselves managing remote teams. Were they prepared for this challenge?

If you are a manager, how can you overcome the difficulties of organizing and overseeing your team members? What are some tips that would help ensure you and your colleagues are effective during those home working hours?

1) Communicate as often as you can

One of the hardest things about working from home is to overcome the sense of loneliness and isolation that you get when you stop seeing other colleagues around you. Whether your team members are used to working in an office environment or not, the first rule comes like this — support communication with them on a daily basis as often as needed.

You can solve this problem by using a number of communication tools, starting from something very basic like email, moving to keeping the dialogue going through messaging apps (i.e., Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.) and video conferencing tools (i.e., Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google’s Team Hangouts, etc.).

2) Schedule regular team meetings

It’s important to set up regular group meetings to build the connection and feel more inclined to cooperate and communicate with each other on a regular basis.

Additionally, team meetings give remote employees a chance to contribute their ideas and clear up miscommunications regarding project details and expectations.

3) Set clear expectations

Help your team see clearly what they should do and set realistic expectations for their work. It means defining the scope, deadlines, and deliverables for each task or project your team is working on. In a word, make sure both you and your team have the right understanding of everything that you are going to do.

4) Establish structured daily check-ins

Many teams benefit from a short daily check-in meeting where they synch up on what’s done, what’s happening that day and the state of the state. A quick daily check-in is a standard practice for remote teams. The purpose here is simple — set the agenda and provide the feedback and resources that your team members need.

5) Be flexible

Remember, in the current situation, a lot is going on for all your team members. Trust them and give them the freedom to work according to a schedule that helps them be most productive.

If you have never managed a remote team, it can be difficult at the beginning. However, by following these five tips, you can establish an efficient system, facilitate communication and ensure all team members complete their tasks successfully.
